Breast augmentation recovery timeline
The recovery process for breast augmentation is relatively short, and most patients recover fully within a few days of having undergone the breast augmentation procedure. However, there will be certain limits on physical activity for several weeks afterward to ensure an optimal result. It is recommended to have a close friend or family member by your side who can help you throughout the recovery process. You'll probably need help moving, getting dressed, and preparing meals at first.
24 hours after surgery
The next day after surgery, you're likely to experience pain and discomfort, which can be controlled with pain medications and antibiotics as recommended by your doctor. Swelling, bruising, and nausea are possible. You should restrict all physical activity during this period, and you will be directed to avoid nicotine, alcohol, and aspirin.
2 to 10 days after surgery
During this time, you'll be prompted to start what is known as displacement exercises. These exercises will help you achieve natural-looking breasts and are usually done at home. Typically, they are only recommended for patients with breast augmentation with submuscular implant placement. You may need to make 1 or 2 follow-up visits during the first ten days of recovery.
10 to 14 days after surgery
At this stage, most patients can perform some light activities. Your doctor will recommend returning to your usual activities at home, but be aware that you cannot make any vigorous physical activity. You are also advised to avoid heavy lifting while your breast is still recovering from surgery.
2 to 3 weeks after surgery
It is recommended that you continue your displacement exercises during this period and gradually increasing your routine and your daily activities. However, it is still not recommended to do upper body exercises, such as push-ups and weightlifting until about a month after surgery.
4 to 6 weeks after surgery
About a month after breast augmentation surgery, you'll begin to notice the final result in your breasts. Your chest is no longer swelling, and you should not need painkillers or medications during this period. You can also start wearing your regular, sporty, or push-up bra and get back to your daily exercise routine.
Several months after surgery
At this point, you are going to be able to see if the results obtained have met your expectations. You'll be able to lift heavy objects again. It is recommended that you schedule 1 or 2 follow-up visits with your surgeon, to check the results and observe where the incision was made. In this way, you can ensure proper healing and confirm that you are satisfied with your results.
