Tips for Tummy Tuck Recovery
For most people, the thought of surgery is pretty scary. But the one thing most people really get anxious about is the recovery process. When recovering from any type of surgery, it is important to treat your body well and follow all doctor orders. Failure to do so can result in complications, which we always want to avoid. Here are some tips to help you get through your tummy tuck recovery process as smoothly and quickly as possible.
NO Smoking - It is extremely important that you stop smoking at least one month before and after your surgery. Heavy smokers that do not stop it have much higher chances of complications. The decreased blood flow caused by cigarettes can hinder the recovery process.
Watch what you eat - After surgery, it is especially important to eat nutritious foods that will help your body stay healthy and recover quickly. Foods such as chicken, salmon, vegetables, and fruits contain many nutrients that supply your body with exactly what it needs to recover.
Drink lots of water - It is always good to keep your body hydrated by drinking enough fluids, especially water. Before and after your surgery, it is recommended that you drink enough water to reduce the chance of any complications.
Get off the bed - Although you are told not to perform any physical activity immediately after surgery, it is very important to get moving as soon as your surgeon gives you the “OK”. Lying or sitting for long periods of time without movement can cause blood clots, which will make the healing process longer and more complicated.
Walk around - Hitting the gym is definitely not recommended soon after your procedure, but this does not mean you shouldn’t get up and walk around everyday. You should walk as much as you can, but start off slow and increase the pace as you continue to recover.
Wear your garments - After your surgery, you will be given compression garments which must be worn until you are told otherwise. These garments help reduce bruising and swelling and help your skin adapt to your new shape while staying nice and firm.
Sleep Position - Sleeping on an incline with the support of pillows is the ideal way to position your body after a tummy tuck. This will ensure that there is no stress on the incision that could cause it to open up.
